Angel shark - Squatina californica

Crossing over a small outcrop, I accidentally landed on top of a rather large 4 ft (122 cm) angel shark (Squatina californica) buried in the sand, surprising us both and making me grateful for a thick wetsuit. It resettled a short distance away where I took close-ups and Scott captured this full length shot. In addition to its flattened body, notice its two small dorsal fins that can fold over when buried in the sand, aiding its concealment.
