Mantis shrimp - Lysiosquilla sp.

A curious pair of eyes watched me as I looked for critters in the algae. Moving closer and closer to this large species of Stomatopod (Mantis shrimp) with my camera, he never pulled down into his sand burrow even though my lens was but a few inches away. Only a video could truly capture the mesmerizing actions of the eyes which move independently of each other with several "pupils" opening and closing as he distinguishes his surrounding world. The next photos is a closer view.
