Mole crab - Emerita sp.

A new species of sand crab surprised both of us when a thin layer of sand was fanned away from the hard substrate exposing the 20mm animal. A different species was recently found in a completely different habitat in the lagoon. Sometimes called mole crabs, they all dig backwards extremely fast. Other species are best known from sandy beaches at high tide.
