Soft coral - Pachyclavularia violacea

This coral pinnacle has for a number of years supported an unusually large amount of soft coral, Pachyclavularia violacea, so named for the purple base that supports its fine tan polyps. It is an invasive species that appears to engulf certain corals and produces a smothering blanket of rubbery tissue that does not look as if it breaks down easily. Although we've seen it in small patches in other areas, this coral pinnacle seems to offer ideal conditions for its growth. The section in this photo measures 5 inches (13cm)
