Our
trip to Anacapa last weekend was highlighted with one of those "National
Geographic" moments. Pleuronocodes planipes, sometimes called
the pelagic red crab (or simply "red crab"), is actually a species
of squat lobster who show up now and then in large numbers along Southern California's
islands and coastlines to breed, often ending up washing ashore on beaches.
As we learned this day, they also provide a welcome feast for clever birds as
well as a multitude of beneficiaries below water.
