California mussels - Mytilus californianus

Although we have little reason to dive along the very shallow rocky shoreline where these mussels live in huge quantities, this clump must have broken free and fallen down from above to rest at the base of the cove. The larger of the Mytilus califorianus were 6 inches (15mm). Many in the photo have barnacles attached.
