Exquisitely covered in fragile but venomous spines, a large fire urchin species, Asthenosoma varium, was a constant menace and not always easy to avoid, especially at night! 6-8 inches in diameter. Even through a 3mm wetsuit, brushing against one resulted in strong pain that lasted 10 minutes or so.
