This cryptic, sand covered stonefish, Synanceia verrucosa, was stunning in its hideousness. My attention was drawn to its mouth, which at first appeared to be a large scallop. Luckily I noticed its eyes! Undoubtedly, many a fish surely made the same error with more serious results. At least 12 inches (30cm).
