Finally a moonsnail, Tanea undulata (40mm with trailing foot), had emerged from the sand at the beginning of our night dive. As is so common at night, a swarm of krill-like animals descended in front of our lights, triggering a feeding behavior we had never witnessed in moonsnails, which are known to feed on bivalves and shelled mollusks by enveloping them and drilling holes through their shells to consume the flesh. The first of three photos show Tanea undulata, surrounded by a cloud of "krill," just beginning to extend its proboscis.
