Protoreaster nodosus (Linnaeus, 1758)

These hefty stars were common at night in some sandy areas.

A number of individuals seen at night at Minilog were spawning, releasing their gametes into the water for external fertilization. Many were raised up on their arms to eject their spawn as high up in the water as they could.
