Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1758)
Red or common lionfish, 45.7cm

Pterois volitans is common in a range of habitats around Bali. Young ones with longer pectoral fin rays are especially photogenic. Apparently, in Indonesia the Pacific species Pterois volitans overlaps with the almost identical Pterois miles from the Indian Ocean, so it is possible that some of these photos might be the latter.

Dendrochirus zebra behind.

Some have well developed flaps with eyespots on their antennae.

Younger specimens.

Small juvenile.
