Asio flammeus (Pontoppidan, 1763)
Short-eared Owl
Marshallese: "lijemao"

The Short-eared Owl is an occasional visitor to the Marshalls. There are different subspecies in Hawaii and Pohnpei, east and west of the Marshalls respectively, and we are not sure which one occasionally shows up here. This photo was taken at night in March, 2021, on Roi-Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, by Christina Sylvester in an area with a plentiful food supply of rats and mice.
