The Tufted Duck is considered an Accidental Vagrant by Clapp (1999), who reports only a single young and possibly starving individual collected on Kwajalein in 1964. The birds figured below were observed and photographed by Christina Sylvester in one of the Kwajalein fresh water tanks in February and again in December, 2018. The male is darker black on the back and chest with bright white on the sides, and has a tuft of feathers trailing back from the top of the head.
