Aythya fuligula (Linnaeus, 1758)
Tufted Duck

The Tufted Duck is considered an Accidental Vagrant by Clapp (1999), who reports only a single young and possibly starving individual collected on Kwajalein in 1964. The two birds figured below, which appear to be females of this species, were observed and photographed in one of the Kwajalein fresh water tanks in February 2018. The male is darker black on the back and chest with bright white on the sides, and has a tuft of feathers trailing back from the top of the head.
