Phaethon lepturus Daudin, 1802
White-tailed Tropicbird
Marshallese: "jipkorej"

White-tailed Tropicbirds are rare at Kwajalein. We have seen about three individuals, all flying at a distance. Two of them were flying toward Gea Island and the other toward Tabik Island near the northwestern tip of the atoll. We have no photos of the adults. The individual below was a young specimen of what was probably the White-tailed Tropicbird (rather than the Red-tailed) that was being raised by the staff of the Mid-Pacific Marine Lab on Enewetak Atoll, about 550km northwest of Kwajalein, in 1978.
