French Frigate Shoals, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

French Frigate Shoals is a wide expanse of shallow reefs and one lonely pinnacle of sinking volcanic rock roughly halfway along the chain from the main Hawaiian Islands to Midway and Kure at the far northwestern end. We have not been there, but one of our animals, Ceratosoma? sp. h248, came from somewhere in the area. The photo shows Whale-Skate, one of the few islands above water when I passed over in 1978. A very low island to begin with, Whale-Skate has succumbed to rising sea levels and the erosion that comes with it. What is left is now submerged.
