Makua Ledge is easily recognized from the shore. At the southern end of Makua Beach is a narrow finger of reef bench, usually just above the water line, that juts straight out from the rocky shore. During high tides or surfy conditions, water readily comes over it. When it is calm, it is easy to walk out on it in full dive gear to the end to save a couple of minutes of swimming outward.
From the entry at the end of the ledge, the bottom is mostly flat and hard with some potholes as you head outward. Far enough out you might get to some small ledges. In the potholes and ledges there are a fair number of nudibranchs.
The photos show the ledge at a relatively high tide when the water level is close to the level of the ledge itself. Getting out of the water might be a bit tricky at the lowest tides, but usually there is just enough of a swell to lift you up to where you could scramble out of the water and onto the top of the ledge. If not, Makua Beach is not far away.
