Pohnpei Boating

A short walk down the hill gets you to a small cove nestled in the mangroves where the boats are kept.

The long narrow shallow-draft boats are a good match for the conditions here. Most of the diving is done along passes in the reef, where if you get the timing right, you'll gently drift into the lagoon with the clean ocean water coming in on an incoming tide. The boat follows and picks you up on the other end.

Lunchtime usually means a visit to a deserted beach or fishermen's camp. You can spend the time digesting or snorkeling on the shallow surrounding reefs.

Rarely, if the tide is high enough, you might even get to return from the western reefs through mangrove channels.

The standard steering technique.

Somewhere in the picture below, the air ends and the water begins.
