Common giant clam - Tridacna maxima

Previous

This one has lost its color in patches. Since the color comes from the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, in these patches the algae must have died or been expelled from the clam tissue. This can happen when the clam is overly shaded from light, but paling under those circumstances is usually more uniform. This patchiness could be a disease of the clam or algae.
