Common giant clam - Tridacna maxima

A potentially unpleasant spot for this clam. We call this "killer coral." Unlike most of the reef hard corals, this one has potent stinging nematocysts that pack quite a wallop. A diver unlucky enough to rub bare skin against it can get stinging and itchy welts like those made by poison oak. It can even sting through the thin dive suits many divers wear. I hope the clam is immune to the sting.
