The well-developed flutes on this young Tridacna maxima could easily fool someone into thinking it was a T. squamosa. We have seen a number of books and web site photos with an occasional misidentification. As mentioned earlier, the black spots around the edge of the mantle are characteristic of T. maxima. T. squamosa has nothing like these.
