Solomon Islands Flatworms (Platyhelminthes)

These flatworms were all photographed in the Solomon Islands on two trips in 1987 and 1994. Positive identification of species and genera often require detailed examination of the internal anatomy, but Newman & Cannon (2003) and Newman & Cannon (CD) were helpful in guiding identification of these variable and often colorful animals. Much remains to be learned about them, and many species still need to be named. Species numbers for unknowns are mostly those used in the Newman & Cannon CD, although new numbers were provided for species we could not find in that publication.

All photos were taken on film with a Nikonos camera and extension tubes. Most film was being saved for sea slugs, so only a few flatworms were photographed. Measurements were not taken in the field and animals were not collected, so any sizes given are usually very rough eyeball estimates often based on distant memories, and are provided only as a general guideline of what to look for.
