Exaiptasia diaphana (Rapp, 1829)
30mm

These small brown anemones are common in lagoon Halimeda patches and in some areas around rocks on shallow lagoon and seaward reefs. They can be found thickly growing on buoy lines, particularly those that mark lagoon bottom shipwrecks. This anemone is often considered a pest in home aquaria. They slip in unnoticed on live rock or algae, then grow and divide at a rapid pace to start to choke out the tank. A species of nudibranch in the genus Berghia is a predator on these anemones and is raised in captivity and sold to try to help keep the anemone numbers down.
