Palythoa tuberculosa is common on intertidal and subtidal reefs. Intertidally, it forms extensive mats near the seaward edge of the reef, a few meters lagoonward of the groove and spur system where waves break. Subtidally, it covers hard reef rock in colonies that range up to several meters or more across.
