A small grouper, Cephalopholis leopardus is moderately common at Kwajalein on most lagoon and seaward reefs. It is similar in size to Cephalopholis spiloparaea and variable in its shade of red to brown, but can be recognized by the dark blotches under the posterior portion of the second dorsal fin.
