Plectropomus areolatus is common at Kwajalein on most lagoon and seaward reefs. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish them by sight from small Plectropomus laevis, but P. areolatus has a distinctly straight or slightly convex posterior edge to the tail fin, which also bears a narrow white posterior margin. This is usually a shy species and is difficult to approach. Sometimes they can be seen at a distance gathering in large numbers for breeding. They can show a variety of colors, but are always spotted with blue that is usually ringed in black.
This one was asleep on the reef at night.
