Dredging

Originally, Kwajalein Islands was only about 2.5 miles long and less than half a mile wide, but dredging sand from the lagoon and piling it up on the reef expanded that on both ends and along much of the lagoon shore. The northeastern expansion extended from approximately the breakwater visible at lower right to the north (upper and a little left) and the new land was primarily for housing. The sand used to extend the island here was sucked from the edge of the lagoon reef, forming that medium blue patch between the shallow green water next to the island and the deep blue of the lagoon bottom at left.
