Kwajalein Island, oceanside erosion

Much of the seaward shoreline of Kwajalein has been beefed up with large boulders and riprap. At many unprotected sites, island banks are being eaten back. The coastline in the first scene below was rebuilt and enhanced with rock and large concrete blocks after erosion exposed unexploded ordnance left over from World War II.

Drawing back a bit from the scene above, the eroding unenhanced shoreline is visible.

Looking the other direction, an old rusty pipe pokes out of the eroding bank.

Eroding bank.

A couple of feet down an eroding bank in October 2013 were embedded a couple of Olympia beer cans, a brand popular in the 1960s but not sold at Kwaj for many years.
