This species is not extremely common, but they can be seen frequently enough on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs. At their maximum size, they are the largest of the butterflies. It has a varied diet consisting of coral polyps, anemones, benthic invertebrates, and algae. This one seems harder to approach than most butterfly species.
Like most butterflies, they change color somewhat at night.
