This butterfly is relatively rare at Kwajalein, most often seen on shallow southern lagoon pinnacles. Occasionally it can also be found on other lagoon and seaward reefs.

The fish below is pecking at algae-covered rocks. A territorial damsel Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus is about to chase the butterflyfish away.
