Heniochus varius (Cuvier, 1829)
Humphead bannerfish, 19cm

These are moderately uncommon at Kwajalein, but can be seen often enough on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs. They are usually paired and often in the same areas as other species of Heniochus. We have frequently seen pairs of H. varius, H. chrysostomus, and H. monoceros hanging around the same large colony of table Acropora.

The hump on the head is not as strongly developed in younger animals (below).

In smaller juveniles, the dorsal fin is proportionally taller.
