Amphiprion tricinctus inhabits Stichodactyla mertensii rarely; usually Amphiprion chrysopterus is found in that anemone. When A. tricinctus is in a S. mertensii, the orange seems to disappear from the anemonefish, turning it all black with two or three white bands and maybe a bit of a pale snout. Very small A. tricinctus in S. mertensii usually have their normal orange and black coloration; it seems that the black replaces the orange as the time exposed to the anemone increases.
