Although we put these together as Huenia sp. 1, the variations suggest there could be more than one species included. Animals that resemble these have sometimes been figured in popular books and websites as Huenia brevifrons, but it apparently is not that species. These mostly small crabs live and around clumps of Halimeda algae, where they are often difficult to distinguish. We have seen them on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs.
They are often well camouflaged in their typical algae habitat.
This one may be freshly molted with a clean carapace.
