Gymnomuraena zebra (Shaw, 1797)

This is another of the highly secretive morays. We have had only glimpses of these at Kwajalein on a few occasions, almost never for long enough to take a photo. Only once were we able to catch a bit of the body as the eel slithered from one rock hideout to another. The image immediately below was captured from the couple of seconds of video we managed to get. It is reported to eat crustaceans, mollusks and sea urchins with their special crushing teeth.

The two photos below were taken in Hawaii, where they were somewhat easier to see.
