Coenobita carnescens Dana, 1851

Coenobita carnescens is a terrestrial hermit common on and near atoll island beaches. It is typically much smaller than the other terrestrial Coenobita species. Our ID is tentative; these specimens are similar to and could be the same as juveniles of Coenobita perlatus. One other related species, Coenibita cavipes, has been reported from Enewetak Atoll in the Marshalls by Garth et al (1987), but we have not found any crabs that match web figures for this species.
