These are relatively common, particularly on the seaward reef. A lot more of the distinctive intial phase fish are seen than the terminal males, whose dark patch on the top of the head and above the pectoral makes them easy to confuse with Scarus forsteni.
The initial phase has a black band through the eye, followed by yellow blotches on the body.
