Lactoria fornasini (Bianconi, 1846)
Thornback cowfish, 23cm

This cowfish is rare in the Marshalls, observed only a few times over lagoon slope Halimeda algae patches. It could be more common, since those we have seen were quite shy and quickly swam away from approaching divers. Even the photo below was taken from some distance and enlarged. Possibly most of them leave the area before we get close enough to recognize them.
