Lactoria fornasini (Bianconi, 1846)
Thornback cowfish

This cowfish is rare in the Marshalls, observed only a few times over lagoon slope Halimeda algae patches. It could be more common, since those we have seen were quite shy and quickly swam away from approaching divers. Even the photo below was taken from some distance and enlarged. Possibly, most of them leave the area before we get close enough to recognize them. One other cowfish, tentatively identified as Lactoria cornuta, has been seen in Kwajalein harbor. We have no photograph of the Kwajalein L. cornuta, but it was much larger and shaped more like photos we have seen of L. cornuta.
