Galeocerdo cuvier (Peron & Lesueur, 1822)
Tiger shark, 750cm

These large sharks are not often seen by divers, but are occasionally encountered throughout the atoll, both in the lagoon and on the seaward slope. We have seen two while diving the west reef, and both of them ignored us completely. Most tigers we have seen were from boats in the lagoon west of Ebeye, where they were feeding on garbage floating from shore. In years past, several large tigers were caught by fishermen at the Shark Pit at the west side of Kwaj.
