Sphyrna lewini (Griffith & Smith, 1834)
Scalloped hammerhead shark, 430cm

These are sighted periodically on both seaward and lagoon reefs around the atoll. A few years ago, they were regularly seen off Speedball on Roi, and recently another has been spotted there. Periodically, small groups of them will show up around lagoon shipwrecks in the lagoon; they hang around there for several weeks or months and are seen often, but then disappear. We have seen them at both the Azakaze Maru and Akibasan Maru wrecks. Many years ago, one of us saw one large hammerhead while fishing on the north side of Echo Pier. Both photos below were taken by Jay Lord on the Akibasan, depth probably 30-40m.
