Taeniurops meyeni (Müller & Henle, 1841)
Blackblotched stingray, 330cm

The blackblotched stingray is a large species seen occasionally on lagoon and seaward reefs. It is reported to feed primarily on fish.

On two occasions, we have seen large rays humped up like the one below. After it moved, we found it had been covering a small coralhead and was apparently trying to suck out fish hiding in the holes.

The large spine of this species is out near the end of the tail. It is reported to be quite venomous, and its position allows it to be swung around to impale victims. Worldwide, at least two people are reported to have been killed by serious stings.
