Lutjanus gibbus is common at Kwajalein on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs. Adults are usually found in sometimes large schools, while juveniles are most common in lagoon slope patches of Halimeda algae. One Marshallese fisherman told me that fish caught south of Meck Island were safe to eat, but those from farther north were likely to cause "beep-beep," a local word for ciguatera poisoning.
