Myripristis vittata Valenciennes, 1831
Whitetip soldierfish, 25cm

We have usually seen these in small groups in caves and holes on the seaward reef, sometimes on the deeper reef. They are often in ledges with other species, such as the Myripristis kuntee in the lower photograph. The all red body and bright red spiny dorsal fin with distinct white tips is the easiest way to identify M. vittata.
