These large unicornfish lack the unicorn horn on the forehead. They are often seen paired or in small groups on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs. Like the other unicornfish, they can change color quickly when displaying or being cleaned. They can be distinguished from the very similar Naso caesius in their yellowish lower body of the dark form and the white lower lip.

Individuals can change from dark to light forms.
