Melichthys niger (Bloch, 1786)
Black triggerfish, 50cm

Melichthys niger is relatively common on the shallow seaward reef, where they are most often seen swimming, often in small groups but occasionally in large schools, well up off the bottom feeding on plankton. They tend to be a bit shy, retreating from divers who approach to try to take photos.

The remaining photos are captured from zoomed-in video and are low resolution.
