Tridacna gigas (Linnaeus,
1758)
We
saw the largest member of the giant clam family on only one occasion, when we
stumbled upon what was probably a testbed for raising Tridacna gigas
on the reef. There were about a dozen medium size clams staked out in two rows
and some smaller ones being raised in pens. I hope they were being raised to
try to repopulate the reefs, where giant clams have severely suffered from overfishing.
