Abantennarius coccineus (Lesson, 1831)
Scarlet frogfish, 13cm

The body color pattern and structure of the esca (lure) match some descriptions of A. coccineus, but the identification is uncertain. The first few animals were found under rocks or in piles of loose rubble on the Kwajalein Atoll seaward reef at depths of about 6-15m and the animals were roughly 30-50mm in length. We have also seen what we think is this species in red, yellow and brown forms.

The fish below was in a local aquarium.

The fish below almost seems more like the one we are calling Abantennarius nummifer.
