While warming water is the greatest contributor to coral bleaching, during bleaching episodes the portion of the coral colony most exposed to direct sunlight is more affected. The healthy, brown colored portion of this colony was shaded by another fungiid coral and kept its symbiotic zooxanthellae while the exposed portion of the colony bleached.
