Montipora cf patula Verrill, 1869

At least some of these resemble figures of Montipora patula in that they form spreading encrustations over hard reef rock. It is possible, probably even likely, that not all the specimens figured on this page are the same species.

The purple Montipora is growing next to what appears to be a colony of Platygyra.

Several Montipora species were prone to bleaching white from warm water. Many did not recover from the bleaching episodes of the past few years. More information on coral bleaching at Kwajalein can be found here or here.
