On the deeper seaward slope, a more fragile and lighter weight Stylaster replaces the more robust and heavier shallow water species. It is common hanging from the ceilings of ledges and caves at depths of 40m and deeper, and often forms larger colonies than its shallow water cousins. We have seen some we estimated at more than a half meter (nearly 2 feet) in height. One of these was not attached to the wall, instead stuck on a partially loose sponge, allowing us to lift it; it seemed to weigh almost nothing.
