These flamboyant starfish-eating shrimp were found, usually in pairs, at various places around Hawaii, where they often sit out in the open apparently immune to predation. Hawaiian specimens of this widespread species tend to be more magenta in color rather than the pink and blue of those from the western Pacific (e.g., Bali).
