The seal below that hauled out on the beach of a sand spit on the south reef of Kure Atoll had been bitten by a large tiger shark. The bite was probably close to 40cm in diameter or more. The seal was alive and alert, and was accompanied by a larger one. During our stay we saw other seals with pretty large bite scars that had successfully healed, and as no vital organs seemed to be hit, this one may have been able to survive. I hope so.
